Frequent Questions

We have organized questions that we often receive about Eboleth House and the area. If you have any additional questions that are not answered here, please contact us.

During which months can we stay at Eboleth House?

The rental season begins in mid-May and extends through the end of October. Be sure to reserve your dates as early as possible, especially for weeks in the summer.

When is the best time to visit?

Maine is beautiful year-round! If you're seeking warmer temperatures, late May through October are generally the months that have warmer days. No matter when you visit though, it's always a good idea to be prepared for changing weather, which is very common in Maine. We recommend planning to dress in layers and bringing a rain jacket. While our climate is ever-changing, the coast usually receives less rain in July-September. Other months are still very pleasant, but you may have an extra day or two of rain during those times.

The busiest tourist months tend to be mid-June through the end of September. However, with Eboleth House being more secluded, you can rest assured that you will be able to escape the hustle and bustle of the larger cities and towns and relax in quiet surroundings.

How can we book Eboleth House and what is the cost to rent?

The best option for booking Eboleth House is by visiting our booking management site directly, or calling the management office at 207-367-2550. This method is an easy process and you can talk directly to our booking manager to ask any questions and ensure your reservation is secured for the dates you wish to stay. You are also able to save on the costs of additional fees. However, if you prefer, you may also book through Airbnb or VRBO

Please note, July and August fill up quickly and are typically booked by early April.

We accept weekly bookings from Friday to Friday, but may be able to accommodate shorter or longer stays - please feel free to always ask if you're interested in a different timeframe. Weekly rates vary depending upon seasonal times and a typical week rental starts at around $1,400 for off-peak season.

Is Eboleth House pet-friendly?

Yes! We understand how important it is to find comfortable accommodations for you and your pet and we welcome well-behaved pets. Eboleth House even has a Pet Program - if you take photos of your pet during your stay at the house and share them to our social media page, we will send your pet a special surprise gift once you're back home.

How close is the beach?

The beach is a short walk (approximately 4-5 minutes) across the yard. A newer set of wooden stairs leads down to the beach.

Is the property suitable for young children?

Yes, we definitely welcome children of all ages and we have equipped the house with safety measures to help keep children out of harm's way.

A pack-n-play is available for infants up to 30 pounds, and an adjustable twin size memory foam mattress is available for children or even adults. The mattress may be easily used on the floor and configured as needed for a more secure and comfortable sleeping experience.

Can we swim or kayak on Eggemoggin Reach?

The calm waters of Eggemoggin Reach, which is the body of water that meets the beach, is fantastic for swimming, boating and fishing. The shore is less rocky than some other parts of the coastline, making it simple to launch a kayak, canoe or paddleboard and easy to get in and out of the water if swimming. Since the reach is sheltered from the open ocean, the water here tends to be slightly warmer and calmer. It's a popular waterway for many sailboats and fishing boats.

Even though the water in the reach tends to be calmer, we cannot emphasize enough how important it is to check the weather forecast for Sedgwick, Maine ahead of time for the period of time you plan to be out or in the water. Fog, rain and a change in wind can happen very quickly and conditions can become dangerous for small boats and swimmers who are caught unaware and unprepared.

What is the weather like and when is low and high tide?

On average, summer temperatures range from low 70's-80's during the day and around low 60's at night. Fall brings cooler temperatures of about 10-20 degrees cooler. Dressing in layers is always a good idea since it can feel very warm during the day, but quickly grow colder once the sun sets. Expect to feel more of a temperature variation if you're on the water on a boat or in a kayak.

Low and high tide times vary everyday with a complete tide change about every 6 hours. To see the most accurate tide times, you can check the daily-updated tide chart for Blue Hill Harbor.

What kind of wildlife might we see and are the insects bad during summer?

Maine is mostly wilderness and rural, so the chance of seeing wildlife is pretty high. The type of wildlife you may encounter depends upon where you are in the state. At Eboleth House, we have seen a variety of birds, porcupines, skunks, ermine, wild turkeys, deer, red foxes, bobcats and black bears. You'll likely hear the tree frogs at night during the late spring and early summer. Moose are not common along the coast and can be found more inland and further north.

The wildlife is fascinating to watch and you may even be able to get a few good photos if you're quiet and patient. Most of the activity occurs just after dawn and around dusk. The animals that cross the property are not used to humans and will run the other way if they hear or see you. However, please be cautious if you are letting your dog out at night. Always keep your dog close to you and don't let them run off alone at night or on a walk.

Animals in the ocean include a variety of fish, shellfish, jellyfish and of course, sharks. Most of these marine creatures aren't looking to cross paths with humans and won't bother you. There are a larger number of jellyfish during the warmer months, so keep an eye out when in the water or if you see one washed up on shore.

On a smaller scale, insects in Maine can also vary somewhat by area. During the warmer months, you will encounter mosquitos and black flies. On the beach, you might notice what seems like fleas in larger patches of dried seaweed, but these little creatures are actually tiny crustaceans and aren't harmful. All year round you will notice ticks - both dog and deer ticks are extremely common. Note that some deer ticks do carry Lyme disease, so it's very important to perform a whole body tick check on yourself and your pets at least once a day. Insect repellant for mosquitos and black flies usually does the trick to keep them away and spraying shoes and pants with permethrin helps to keep ticks from hitching a ride on your clothes.
