Cooling & heating
Maine temperatures can vary quite a bit from day to night, but we aim to keep the house comfortable at all times. Heating is controlled room by room, with thermostats located in each bedroom, the upstairs bathroom, kitchen, and living room. Air conditioning is available downstairs only and is controlled using the same thermostats. Upstairs bedrooms are equipped with six free-standing fans, and opening the windows at night is often an effective way to keep the space cool.
Outdoor cooking
The gas grill and propane burner are stored in the garage which can be accessed by manually lifting the door. There are two propane tanks available, and at least one should be full—use the gauge attachment to check levels. If you need additional propane, please contact our local property management team at (207) 367-2550 for assistance. The large seafood pot is also stored in the garage, along with a 100-foot hose that can be attached to the side of the house for filling the pot. When you’re finished cooking, please return all items to the garage and close the door to prevent curious wildlife from searching for leftovers.
The beach & water activities
The beach is just steps away—simply cross the yard and follow the mowed grass and gravel path to the wooden and stone stairs that lead down to the shore. Here on Eggemoggin Reach, the water is typically calmer, making it a wonderful spot for wading, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing. That said, there is regular boat traffic, so please keep an eye out for both small and larger vessels, and be mindful of changing weather conditions while you’re on the water. We recommend avoiding swimming or boating when the water is rough or whitecaps are present. Tides shift every six hours by 12–14 feet, so be aware of your surroundings to avoid areas that may soon be covered at high tide. For your convenience, use these links to follow tide changes and check weather conditions. There are two beach-friendly blankets on the bench in the entryway that you may take down to the beach. You may also take the plastic Adirondack chairs from the porch down as well, providing all returns back with you. Please note that fires are not permitted on the beach.
All things lobster
In Maine, you are going to see lobster everywhere - on menus, on fishing boats, on hats, shirts and keychains. Whether you are looking to experience lobster for the first time or it is a favorite, there are many local options for a lobster dinner. If you are interested in having your lobster cooked for you, there are many great lobster shacks and restaurants nearby to get the full experience. The two closest places are LDI, which is just across the Deer Isle bridge, and the Maine Lobster Lady just down the road in Sargentville.
Alternatively, buying and cooking your own lobster is definitely doable and worth the effort. Start by buying your fresh-off-the-boat live lobsters at the Stonington Co-op. Once you bring them home, keep them in their bag in the refrigerator until you're ready to cook them, which should be the same day. To humanely prepare them for cooking, check out the steps in this lobster preparation video. For cooking and serving, this video by The Seasoned Cook provides easy step-by-step directions. The large pot and propane burner located in the garage are perfect for cooking whole lobsters. The pot will comfortably fit 3-4 lobsters at a time and the propane burner is designed to get the water to the appropriate rolling boil. The 100 ft hose in the garage can be attached to the spigot on the side of the house for filling the pot. Individual sets of seafood cracking tools and picks are located in the flatware drawer in the kitchen.
Wildlife
Eboleth House is set in a rural area with abundant local wildlife, including larger animals such as bobcats and black bears as well as a variety of smaller animals and insects, which is part of the natural character of the Maine coast. When spending time outdoors, we recommend keeping a close eye on your pets, especially at dawn and dusk when wildlife is more active. It's best to avoid taller grasses, brush, and leaf piles as ticks favor these types of environments and will try to hitch a ride. Checking for ticks regularly throughout the day is a simple precaution, as both deer and dog ticks are present in the area and Lyme disease can occur in pets and humans.
Local events
Throughout the year, there are a variety of local events—from farmers markets and craft fairs to seasonal festivals, theatre and live music. Depending on the time of your visit, you will find something special happening nearby that offers a taste of the local culture and community. Check our local events page to find some of the.current events happening in the area.
Local restaurants we like and recommend
There are plenty of great restaurants to choose from in the immediate area and nearby towns. A few of our "go to" places include Marlintini's Bar and Grill in nearby Blue Hill, a great place to go to with family and friends, Barncastle, also in Blue Hill, offers more of an upscale experience. For a unique local experience with a beautiful view of Goose Cove, we recommend Aragosta just across the bridge in Deer Isle. Lots of others come to mind, but these are just a few to get you started. We will continue to add to this list as we discover new favorites. As always, reach out to us via the chat feature on the site or contact us via email for more recommendations and thoughts on our experiences.

Fun facts
Eboleth House was originally built in the mid 1800's, shortly after Maine became a state. Since then, only four families have owned the property, one of the owners being a master craftsman who built the spiral staircase. The field in the back of the house used to be an apple orchard, which one of the original families tended. The house underwent major renovations around 2019, but still retained its original granite foundation.
As the current owners, we strive to keep as much of the original charm in place as possible while making small updates that provide our guests with the utmost comfort and convenience. We have put a few personal touches in place upstairs, particularly, naming the bedrooms around a central theme. Captain's Quarters is a nod to all of the captains that have sailed through Eggemoggin Reach; Hub Island has special meaning as our family once owned property in that area of Flye Point and Herrick Bay and we spent much time walking and kayaking to Hub Island and beyond; similarly, The Jib was the name of the family property on Flye Point; Seal Island is an ode to one of our favorite birds, the Atlantic Puffin. We hope you enjoy the past history and current charm.
