For those of you who have participated in the past, we hope your furry family members found their surprise gifts fun and delicious. There is no limit to participating - send us some updated photos from this year that we may share and we will gladly send your furkids even more surprises.
Heating & cooling
As you may remember, Maine temperatures can shift quite a bit between day and night, but the house is set up to keep you comfortable. Each room has its own thermostat for heat, and air conditioning is available downstairs using the same controls. Upstairs, you’ll find the bedroom fans, and opening the windows at night is still one of the best ways to keep things cool.
Outdoor cooking
The grill and propane burner are in the garage and you may remember accessing them by manually lifting the door. There are two propane tanks on hand—feel free to check the levels with the gauge, and reach out to The Island Agency at (207) 367-2550 if you need a refill. You’ll also find the seafood pot and hose there for easy setup. When you’re done, just return everything to the garage and be sure to close the door to keep wildlife from looking for leftovers.
The beach & water activities
As you know, the beach is just a short walk away—across the yard and down the path to the stairs. The calm waters of Eggemoggin Reach are great for wading, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing, though it’s always important to keep an eye out for passing boats and changing weather. As a reminder, it’s best to avoid the water when conditions are rough or whitecaps are present, and to stay aware of the tide shifts, every six hours. You’ll find the water-resistant beach blankets in the entryway and are welcome to bring the plastic Adirondack chairs down with you—just return everything afterward. And as a reminder, no fires are permitted on the beach.
All things lobster
You may have noticed the last time you were here that lobster is everywhere - on menus, on fishing boats, on hats, shirts and keychains. Whether you are looking to experience lobster for the first time or it is a favorite, there are many local options for a lobster dinner. To have your lobster cooked for you, the two closest places are LDI, which is just across the Deer Isle bridge, and the Maine Lobster Lady just down the road in Sargentville.
Alternatively, buying and cooking your own lobster is definitely doable and worth the effort. Start by buying your fresh-off-the-boat live lobsters at the Stonington Co-op. Once you bring them home, keep them in their bag in the refrigerator until you're ready to cook them, which should be the same day. To humanely prepare them for cooking, check out the steps in this lobster preparation video. For cooking and serving, this video by The Seasoned Cook provides easy step-by-step directions. The large pot and propane burner located in the garage are perfect for cooking whole lobsters. The pot will comfortably fit 3-4 lobsters at a time and the propane burner is designed to get the water to the appropriate rolling boil. The 100 ft hose in the garage can be attached to the spigot on the side of the house for filling the pot. Individual sets of seafood cracking tools and picks are located in the flatware drawer in the kitchen.
Wildlife
As you know, Eboleth House is surrounded by Maine’s natural wildlife, from larger animals like bobcats and black bears to smaller creatures and insects. When outdoors, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on pets, especially during dawn and dusk when activity increases. Avoiding taller grasses and brush can help reduce tick exposure, and regular tick checks are always recommended, as deer and dog ticks are common in the area.
Local events
Throughout the year, there are a variety of local events—from farmers markets and craft fairs to seasonal festivals, theatre and live music. Depending on the time of your visit, you will find something special happening nearby that offers a taste of the local culture and community. Check our local events page to find some of the.current events happening in the area.
Local restaurants we like and recommend
We are sure you have already discovered a few local places that are now favorites. If you are looking for a couple additional suggestions, we like Marlintini's Bar and Grill in nearby Blue Hill because it is a great casual family-friendly place. We also enjoy Barncastle in Blue Hill for when we are looking for a more upscale experience. For a unique local experience with a beautiful view of Goose Cove, we cannot pass up Aragosta just across the bridge in Deer Isle. Lots of others come to mind, but these are just a few in case you have yet to try them. We will continue to add to this list as we discover new favorites. As always, reach out to us via the chat feature on the site or contact us via email for more recommendations and thoughts on our experiences.
Reviews and feedback
We always appreciate hearing about your stay and value any feedback you’re willing to share. Your input helps us continue to improve and ensures each visit is even better than the last. If you’d like to leave a review, you can do so through The Island Agency, VRBO, Airbnb, or Google, and you’re always welcome to reach out to us directly as well.
Fun facts
Eboleth House was originally built in the mid 1800's, shortly after Maine became a state. Since then, only four families have owned the property, one of the owners being a master craftsman who built the spiral staircase. The field in the back of the house used to be an apple orchard, which one of the original families tended. The house underwent major renovations around 2019, but still retained its original granite foundation.
As the current owners, we strive to keep as much of the original charm in place as possible while making small updates that provide our guests with the utmost comfort and convenience. We have put a few personal touches in place upstairs, particularly, naming the bedrooms around a central theme. Captain's Quarters is a nod to all of the captains that have sailed through Eggemoggin Reach; Hub Island has special meaning as our family once owned property in that area of Flye Point and Herrick Bay and we spent much time walking and kayaking to Hub Island and beyond; similarly, The Jib was the name of the family property on Flye Point; Seal Island is an ode to one of our favorite birds, the Atlantic Puffin. We hope you enjoy the past history and current charm.
